Mr. John Nerger, Executive Deputy to the Commanding General, U.S. Army Materiel Command, speaks to attendees at the End of Operations Ceremony for the Umatilla Chemical Depot at the Hermiston Chamber of Commerce in Hermiston, Ore., March 15. Nerger told employees and workers at the facility that they should find satisfaction in completing a difficult job and making a lasting impact on the community and the country. “You can choose to read history, or you can choose to make history,” Nerger said. “I think what you’ve done here (at Umatilla) is to make history.” The ceremony marked the official end of chemical processing at the facility, and the start of the transfer of ownership to the Oregon National Guard and community partners.
