Job & Career Fair to Help Soldiers Returning From War

Story by KMTR

Springfield (KMTR) - In just a few weeks, Oregon National Guard soldiers who have just returned from overseas duty have a chance to attend a job fair in Springfield exclusively for them.

Three previous job fairs for National Guard veterans around the state this summer have drawn tremendous interest. More than 3,100 returnees attended one in Portland recently.

So far, more than 40 employers have signed up to appear at the job fair in Springfield on August 7th.

Oregon Senator Ron Wyden, a Democrat, says the fair is a way to make up for what Oregon lacks in terms f a big military base.

"When soldiers come back from the east coast of the United States, they come back to a big fort, almost a kind of cocoon of support services, medical, jobs and essential help for their families. We don't have that in our state, so we're creating job fairs like this; our own, in effect, ‘soft landing,’” said Sen. Wyden

The job fair is scheduled for Saturday, August 7th at the Regional Sports Center in Springfield from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.
